Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Receives $30,000 Gift from Lalita and Walter Janke

Lalita and Walter Janke recently donated $30,000 to FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. The donation was made to support the College’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies with graduate student assistantships and scholarships.

“I am delighted to be able to help students who are consciously making an impact in the world,” said Lalita Janke, member of both the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Advisory Board and Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Advisory Council.

Scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to feminist or community activism.

“These fellowships will prepare students for careers in agencies and institutions that serve women, gender, and sexuality issues or for doctoral and advanced professional training in such fields as law, social work, public policy and non-profit management,” said Josephine Beoku-Betts, director of FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. “The Center is extremely appreciative of this generous gift from the Jankes.”

FAU’s Center for Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies is a strong interdisciplinary program with nationally and internationally known faculty from a variety of disciplines. The program prepares students to think critically about the political, social, economic and historical forces that shape women’s lives, along with women’s responses through activism and advocacy. The Advisory Council for the Center, which formed in 2009 to assist in raising private funding as a result of threatening budget cuts, co-sponsors events such as the annual Women’s Leadership Forum to raise money and awareness about the Center. The theme for this year’s forum, which took place in March, was “Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.”
