A new grant from Chef José Andrés' Longer Tables Fund to Florida Atlantic's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute will fuel the development of a community-based aquaculture facility for conservation and restoration of the queen conch on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. By restoring endangered queen conch populations, engaging island youth in hands-on science, and strengthening local food systems, Harbor Branch is building a more sustainable ocean economy — one that reaches far beyond today.

Former President John Kelly, Ph.D., Announces Retirement

Completing over a decade of dedicated service, John Kelly, Ph.D., recently announced his retirement from Florida Atlantic University. Having served as the university’s president during a transformational eight-year tenure, Kelly’s last day with the university was June 30. During Kelly’s leadership, the university began its drive to reach R1 classification, which it achieved earlier this year. Committed to student success, Kelly and his wife, Carolyn, partnered with philanthropists and higher-education advocates Aubrey and Sally Strul to support academically talented first-generation, low-income students with the Kelly/Strul Emerging Scholars Program. The program has assisted over 160 students since its founding.

Florida Atlantic Gets $1M to Prevent Medication-Related Harm, Falls in Older Adults

Researchers from the Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University have received a $1 million grant from the Florida Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association to launch a new initiative: the Geriatric Emergency Department Pharmacologic Harm Prevention Project. This program seeks to reduce falls and other adverse drug events among older adults by using a personalized approach that tailors medications to an individual’s genetic profile.

University Commits to Athletics Competitive Excellence Fund

Florida Atlantic University has announced its immediate intent to support its Athletics Competitive Excellence Fund (CEF) with an annual multi-million-dollar allocation of auxiliary funds, as recently allowed by the Florida Board of Governors. The university plans to commit an average of $5 million per year to the CEF, which, when combined with private giving, allows Florida Atlantic to far exceed the minimum investment requirements set by the American Athletic Conference.
