Nelson previously served as professor and inaugural chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and chief of the Division of Medical Toxicology and Addiction Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, and chief of the Emergency Department at University Hospital of Newark, a public safety net hospital. Nelson has more than 30 years of academic and clinical leadership experience with a proven record of fostering innovation, research, and clinical excellence.

Student-athletes at Florida Atlantic University achieved a department-wide cumulative GPA of 3.23 in the fall semester – the 19th consecutive semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Collectively, both the men's and women's teams surpassed the mark. Women's teams combined for a 3.518 GPA, the highest fall GPA achieved over the last four years. The men's teams posted a combined 3.230 GPA, just shy of their all-time high of 3.262 set in the fall of 2023.
