

The Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to select Adam Hasner to be the university’s eighth president. A former Florida House Majority Leader, Hasner played a key role in securing funding for Florida Atlantic’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and College of Engineering. He also championed the university’s ocean energy initiatives, laying the groundwork for Florida Atlantic's Office of the Ocean Economy. Beyond his legislative career, he remains active in community and business leadership, serving on multiple boards supporting education and economic development. As the university’s next president, he will build on Florida Atlantic’s legacy and growing national recognition, while working with faculty and staff to chart new strategies for the university’s future.

Florida Atlantic University has earned the esteemed designation of “R1: Very High Research Spending and Doctorate Production” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. To qualify for the R1 status, institutions must meet a stringent set of criteria such as the number of research doctorates awarded and total research expenditures. Florida Atlantic is now the sixth institution in the Florida State University System to hold R1 status. Fewer than 5% of the nearly 4,000 universities in the U.S. hold this designation.

A $1.6 million gift from the Glenn W. Bailey Foundation will extend the Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Marine SEA (Science, Education, and Arts) Scholars program for another five years. The program provides the scientists of tomorrow the opportunity to develop skills in research and communication by working in the lab and serving as outreach ambassadors for the Florida Atlantic Marine Science Laboratory. The Marine Lab, part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, is open to the public and educates more than 200,000 visitors annually on the importance of a balanced coastal ecosystem.

Florida Atlantic University was selected as the recipient of a $21 million multi-year grant from the United States Department of Education Promise Neighborhoods program, helping to ensure children have access to excellent schools and community support systems, and better preparing them to successfully transition into college or career pathways. This is the largest grant that Florida Atlantic has received in its history to date.

After a 6-0 start to the 2025 campaign, Florida Atlantic softball has been ranked No. 19 in the Softball America Top 25. The Owls continued their momentum from their 2024 championship season by going undefeated in the FAU-hosted Paradise Classic. Over the course of the weekend, the team outscored opponents 38-10 and took down three power conference opponents in Ole Miss, Kansas, and the previously ranked Clemson.
