philoSOPHIA is an international feminist philosophical society with an annual peer-reviewed conference. The 11th annual conference will be hosted by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, FL, with the theme of “Affect and Social Justice” to honor the legacy of Teresa Brennan (1952-2003)—Schmidt Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at FAU and founder of our groundbreaking PhD program, as well as a prominent feminist philosopher and advocate of engaged scholarship. Our keynote speaker Sara Ahmed has written groundbreaking books such as Queer Phenomenology (2006), The Promise of Happiness (2010), and maintains an active blog: https://feministkilljoys.com/. Ahmed has decided to launch her forthcoming book, Living a Feminist Life (Duke UP, 2017) at this conference, with copies at 40% off market price. A conference program will be available soon at http://www.philosophiafeministsociety.com/.

Events begin the evening of Thursday, March 30th, 2017, with a dinner, panel, panel and reception at the Boca Marriott; they continue Friday, March 31st and Saturday, April 1st, with panels and lectures throughout the day on the FAU campus (transportation to/from the hotel provided). We will also offer a beach trip and barbeque (with vegan options) for those able to stay on Sunday, April 2nd. For planning purposes, we ask that you register for the Thursday dinner, the Friday keynote (to justify requesting a larger space), and the Sunday trip, which will leave the Boca Marriott at 10am for Red Reef Park—featuring ramp access to the beach, picnic tables, mini-grills, accessible bathrooms—and return at 2pm.

PhiloSOPHIA is committed to the principles of universal design. It is our explicit goal to make the conference as accessible and welcoming as possible from the ground up and also with an understanding that accessibility requires flexibility and ongoing communication with one’s particular community in a given context. To this end, we have included a write-in box in the online registration form for any dietary, lighting, spatial, sound, or other specifications that will be important for the organizers in making the conference accessible. You are welcome to use the write-in box or to email philosophia2017access@gmail.com.
